LED TV Direct Backlight Solution

Atmel's MSL4163/MSL4164 is a TV direct backlight LED driver. The MSL4164 features a 20MHz SPI bus with 100mA per string of LEDs, current accuracy and matching better than 3%, driving 16x10 white LEDs, and 16 device cascades capable of driving up to 2560 white LEDs. The MSL4163 provides a 1MHz I2C serial port with advanced PWM engine and on-chip EEPROM. Mainly used in TV and desktop monitors, medical, industrial instrumentation and car audio/video displays. The MSL4163 provides a 1MHz I2C serial interface that enables video frame-by-frame LED string strength control for 16 cascaded devices for effective area dimming. The device features an advanced PWM engine that easily synchronizes with the video signal, and each string of LEDs has phase adjustment to reduce unwanted LCD phenomena such as motion blur. In addition, the on-chip EEPROM allows us to customize the power-on defaults via the serial interface.

Using Atmel's adaptive SourcePowerTM technology, the MSL4163/4 is able to properly control the DC-DC converter that powers the LED string. These efficiency optimizers minimize power consumption while maintaining high LED current accuracy.

The unique combination of peak current control and pulse width management provides simple full screen brightness control, various area dimming and stable white point. A global peak reference current is set for all LED strings with an external resistor, and global peak current fine tuning is achieved with an 8-bit register. The 8-bit global intensity register is used to adjust the global string drive pulse width, and the 12-bit register is used to adjust the pulse width of individual strings.

The MSL4163/4 is capable of monitoring fault conditions such as open circuit, short circuit, loss of video synchronization and overheating, and provides fault output to inform the system controller. Detailed fault status and control is provided via the serial interface.

The MSL4163/4 is available in a 6 x 6 x 0.75mm, 40-pin TQFN package and operates over the -40°C to 85°C temperature range.
