AMD Southern Islands Family Dual Architecture System Further Confirmed

The news from foreign media further confirmed that the AMD Radeon HD 7000 series graphics card family codenamed “Southern Islands” will adopt two different architecture systems to meet different market requirements.

The Radeon HD 6000 now includes two different architectures. The Radeon HD 6900 series is the new VLIW4 4D stream processor architecture, while the rest is the traditional VLIW5 5D.

When AMD announced a new graphics and computing architecture, we once speculated that such a huge change would require a short transition time, so the Radeon HD 7000 series that will be available in the second half is unlikely to catch up with this bus, but with the catalyst earlier this month. 11.7 Developer Preview A number of core codes that have exposed the Southern Islands family have been claimed to be accompanied by a new architecture.

Today, another source put forward almost the same argument, claiming that the two low-end models codenamed Lombok Radeon HD 7670/7570 will continue to use the VLIW4 architecture. Other higher-end models will all be transferred to the new architecture, including Thames Radeon HD 7790/7850/7870, Tahiti Radeon HD 7970/7950, New Zealand Radeon HD 7990, and more. In other words, they will not support collaboration with Trinity APU.

So what about the Radeon HD 7000M series of mobile platforms? Will it be the same low-end old architecture, high-end new architecture?
