According to Robert Yeh, chairman of LED manufacturer Everlight Electronics, the current price of 8-meter LED street lights is three times higher than that of high-pressure sodium lamps. The price is NT$6,000 (US$186), when two years of power consumption and maintenance costs are considered. When coming in, the overall cost of a high-pressure sodium lamp solution is equivalent to the cost of using LED street lights.
The Taiwan Optical Industry Technology Development Association estimates that the global LED street light market will reach 1.04 billion US dollars this year, and the Chinese market will account for about 560 million US dollars. The number of new LED street lights in China this year will reach 500,000, and the US and European markets will follow in the next three years.
