Seoul Semiconductor, the world's leading LED supplier, announced on July 26, 2010 that the company ranked fourth in the global LED market with sales of up to $301 million. This ranking comes from a market-depth report from the market research firm Strategies Unlimited recently published in the 2010 High Brightness LED Market Review and Outlook.
The above report pointed out that the global LED market increased from 5.08 billion US dollars in 2008 to 5.4 billion US dollars in 2009, an increase of 6.2%. Driven by the growth of the LED TV market, the LED market for display applications has grown significantly, with product sales reaching US$370 million, an increase of 178% year-on-year. Along with the diversified development of LED applications, LED suppliers are also facing more intense market ranking competition while benefiting from diversified sales channels.
In the global LED supplier rankings in 2009, Seoul Semiconductor jumped to fourth place. Philips Lumileds, who finished fourth in 2008, slipped to seventh. Market research firm IMS Research also listed Seoul Semiconductor as one of the world's top four LEDs in its recently released LED market report. It's worth noting that in the ranking report of Strategies Unlimited, Seoul Semiconductor's sales are only $50 million from Cree, the third-ranked company. Seoul Semiconductor’s top three should be just around the corner.
Seoul Semiconductor is also the only Korean company to enter the global top 10 LED rankings. Samsung LED ranked 11th with $170 million in sales, and LG Innotek ranked 14th with $106 million in sales, a huge gap with other leading companies.
Mr. Lee Sang-soo, vice president of semiconductor sales in Seoul, said: "This survey shows that although the sales of LED TVs last year were 10% lower than the overall sales of LEDs, LEDs performed well in other applications such as lighting. Demand for LED TVs from China, Japan and Taiwan will increase significantly, and sales of related LED products will increase accordingly. In addition, LED lighting is regarded as a new growth engine for the LED market. We are actively expanding global lighting with GE.
