AIR 051 | Maximlian Doemling: BMW's Road to Automated Driving in China

Maximlian Doemling, senior manager of BMW China Autopilot, debuted on the CCF-GAIR smart driving workshop. He is mainly responsible for BMW's research on driverless driving and autopilot in China. In the speech, he mainly answered questions about BMW's autopilot in the market, and was also meticulous in detail. It elaborated on the progress and achievements of BMW in each important stage of the development of smart driving.

Why do you do unmanned research?

Improve driving safety.

Provides driving comfort and enjoyment.

Improve the efficiency of the entire driving.

Maximlian Doemling said that BMW recognizes that autopilot is a very important proposition. He did a brief review of BMW’s road to autonomous driving:

In 2006, I actually started to do some autopilots on the training of the track. At that time, autopilot was still a very new topic. So we started with the track training, mainly on the freeway, driving or parking, etc. These more basic skills are to train a self-driving car on the track first.

The second stage was in 2009 when we trained the auxiliary driving function of automatic parking for emergency stop. This means that we can stop the car in an emergency and stop using the helpline.

The third step is 2011, this is the first time we have tested a highway on German highways for autonomous driving. For example, there are auto-driving cars to avoid obstacles.

In 2014 BMW had a special track where we could check the limit of the car. Actually each test was related to the driver, so we set up a special track in this match. No matter how open the car is on the road, we can measure it in the extreme conditions of automatic driving.

In 2015 we started the fully automatic remote parking system, and in 2015 we also developed a technology that allows our car to perform 360-degree inspections and be able to crash, but this model is not yet our product in time. , so now we BMW need to further research and development in the global market for our research on execution. We are mainly based in Munich, Germany, and we also have two R&D facilities in Shanghai.

Many people in Germany asked: Why did you set up an autonomous driving center in China?

Maximlian Doemling smiles: “Please, driving in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou in China’s big cities is indeed a headache. In addition, everyone in China sees that China’s traffic environment is more demanding for drivers.” Why do we? Taking into account the automatic driving function, many people in Germany do not want, because the speed limit in the local highway is 300, in China is willing to accept the automatic driving, and the Chinese customer's tolerance for the price of automatic driving is also more than other s country.

BMW's technical requirements for future driverless driving

From the outside, BMW cars seem to be very conventional, so many people are looking at our cars are thinking that this is not automatic driving, is it unmanned?

Maximlian Doemling said that we have a very powerful on-board system. At the same time, we also put information on these sensors, such as on-board systems, on-board systems, and micro-loading systems, and we fuse them together and reproduce them in real time. In conjunction with our real-time road model, we all know that many of today's cars are not just GPS. They use very accurate algorithms for real-time surveys. Not every street in China has a map, so we built it. A map function, then we can transfer these dynamic information to the entire system. In our map, we can also reflect traffic lights, traffic barriers, left and right directions, the intersection of the next expressway, and The risk of driving on the road, while the car can also change lanes at will, when the road is about 34 kilometers away from the highway, it can remind the car to change lanes in time, etc. All these driving goals are through our perception. The device to transmit, and we also have a comfort sensor and a sense of security Device.

Road model generation and smarter algorithms

The first one is that before we have all the data, we need to make an integration based on different information, then group all the information, and some errors, which may be positional errors, will be eliminated.

After the next step of information acquisition, we will look at our model, and at the same time form the shape and shape of the road. This will include obstacles on the road, as well as driving vehicles, all of which will be input into a statistical model. This is a real-time process. Statistical data model. In fact, we do not need maps. We can also present real road conditions completely. In the middle of this, there will be roads drawn by oneself and there will be turning and curvature of the roads.

The other thing we are doing is not just to use computers to make a smarter algorithm, but to say that we want to build a more secure system. On the one hand, it is the driver's actions and behavior.

There is also the safety of related items. For example, we have a good safety system. We have our HB function. We will ensure that our brakes, engines, engines, etc. are all in a well-maintained environment and conditions. All are integrated and work together. If there is any function change or warning, the whole system will activate the emergency control key. In this case, the driver will immediately warn this situation.

Not easy for all developers

Finally, Maximlian Doemling admitted that it is not easy for all developers to achieve this vision and goal, but we feel that the progress of the work is still fruitful. This is not easy. As a research, it still has its value. BMW also finds various partners in China and around the world.
