The television industry has been having an "ideology" debate for many years. The OLED camp represented by LG and the quantum dot camp represented by Samsung continue to argue who is the future.
Just as "going left or right" became controversial in a historical period, the two continued to chatter because of this topic. In the face of OLED technology, Samsung's two-handed choices show extraordinary contradictions. Originally on the Samsung mobile phone, the OLED technology that did not relax in Castle Peak went to the Samsung TV business, but was replaced by the new stage of quantum dot technology - QLED technology.
However, this debate seems to be settled with the maturity of QLED technology.
The OLED that shines on the mobile phone does not turn on the TV?
In 2007, Samsung produced the first OLED screen. At that time, the industry did not understand the OLED screen, and many manufacturers did not care. Samsung has been pushing the OLED panel from the original mobile phone of Galaxy. At that time, OLED technology was very immature and there were many defects. However, Samsung recognized the future of this technology, so after three generations of products, it finally saw the cloud. Today, Samsung is almost in control of the global OLED mobile phone panel production capacity, Apple's next-generation products will use Samsung's OLED screen.
However, Samsung has avoided OLED technology in its own TV products. The original mature technology has not received attention in the TV product line. Although Samsung tried to use this technology in the early development of OLED technology, Samsung discontinued the OLED screen TV in 2014, and immediately turned to quantum dot technology, and later developed a quantum technology upgrade of quantum dot technology. A new screen type, today's QLED screen.
The TV industry is completely different from mobile phones. The demand for TV screens is “bright, long, and wideâ€. The life of a TV is often as long as 5-10 years, and the characteristics of fascinating colors may be a big selling point on mobile phones, but on TV. It is likely to become a defect.
Exactly, Samsung will insist on using OLED technology on the mobile phone panel, but after turning to the quantum dot technology on the TV panel, it will later upgrade the quantum dot technology to QLED technology. The whole process is just like choosing OLED technology on mobile phones at the time, and it is not relaxing.
The debate on OLED and QLED in the TV industry will be seen.
In the past two or three years, there has been a lot of debate between OLED and quantum dot technology in the industry.
LG chose OLED technology and formed an OLED camp. For many years, it has been facing the Samsung QLED camp across the river, forming a confrontational force.
There has always been a voice in the industry – OLED screens are just not mature enough, and with the balance of capacity and cost, OLED screens will gradually show their advantages. The reason why LG insists is probably the same.
But Samsung's choice of QLED technology is probably not just because "OLED screens are just not mature enough." Especially last year, Samsung acquired QD Vision, a developer of quantum dot materials in the United States, and let the industry see that the debate between OLED and QLED seems to be gradually becoming clear.
Especially after the improvement of quantum dot technology to launch QLED screens, the strategic balance between OLED and QLED is gradually breaking. On the one hand, OLED technology is still in a state of half-lift - low productivity, high cost and poor reliability; on the other hand, QLED screen has low cost, and has the characteristics of high color gamut value, pure color, stable and long-lasting performance, etc. 100 colors, more than 70 types of OLED display. Under the same picture quality, the energy saving of QLED is twice that of OLED screen, and the luminous rate will increase by 30% to 40%, and its energy consumption is lower. Taking into account these factors, the market potential of QLED TV is huge.
Beginning last year, the materials industry is gradually thinking that QLEDs are more promising than OLEDs on large screens. There is even a saying that QLED will replace OLED technology in the future.
In essence, the TV industry is still an industrial manufacturing industry. The core concept of industrial manufacturing is to produce the most mature and stable products at the lowest cost. Since QLED technology can achieve OLED technology at a lower cost and more mature quality control. Even better, the advantages of OLED technology naturally no longer exist.
Domestic academic institutions and panel makers are also making their own choices in the face of OLED and QLED.
The Department of Materials of Zhejiang University has studied the research of QLED panels as a national key discipline. Peng Xiaogang, a professor at Zhejiang University and a quantum dot expert, has repeatedly said in public that “OLEDs are inherently unstable, and their lifetime, light efficiency, etc. have problems that cannot be coordinated at present. The yield rate does not meet the commercial requirements. The quantum dots are solutions. Semiconductor nanocrystals, only need to change their size, can adjust the required color, and the color purity and crystal stability are very high, no need to worry about the service life. Quantum dots may be the best luminescent materials discovered by humans in history." In his view, after three or five years, QLED is bound to represent the next display technology. Because QLED is a technology exploration of quantum dot printing and display by solution processing, in the future, our clothes, walls, paper and other media will become TV.
Professor Peng Xiaogang’s statement has yet to be further verified in the future, but the choice of enterprises in the industrial chain can better reflect the wind direction. More and more panel companies, players in the upstream materials field have begun to actively invest in the development of QLED technology. The domestic panel maker BOE has been successful in OLED technology in the past few years. It has been working hard to develop OLED panels and supply them to domestic mobile phone manufacturers. However, it was discovered that QLED technology sometimes chose to start developing QLED screens. In March of this year, BOE announced the successful development of the QLED screen, which was regarded as a major breakthrough by BOE.
QLED technology will create the next technology monopoly?
Samsung’s choice in the face of technical disputes is always very interesting. Whenever faced with a slap in the face, every seemingly risky act will eventually create the advantage of "monopoly."
Many years ago, I chose OLED technology on the mobile phone panel, and it was also the same in TV technology such as LED, curved surface, ultra high definition, and HDR. After almost every technical dispute, Samsung is always laughing at the end, and Samsung is leading the revolution and trend.
The result is not only because of the sharp sense of smell, but also because of Samsung's own industry chain of electronics, semiconductors and other fields.
When any new technology is put on the agenda, Samsung's huge shipments will always pay for new technology, and mass production and sharing of costs. In the face of huge production capacity and market feedback, new technologies will always get the market war. Practice, continue to mature, and, like snowballing, in the downstream industry chain to create clusters and demonstration effects, invisibly built a camp for themselves, and finally master the market voice.
This rule was reproduced in the process of evolution and promotion of QLED technology. From the beginning of the Samsung one-man show, to the later TCL, Hisense and other downstream manufacturers joined the quantum dot camp, and later to a series of panel makers such as BOE, Huaxing Optoelectronics, Longteng Optoelectronics, etc. chose to develop QLED technology.
The whole process is not only the two technologies of QLED technology and QLED, but also the game between the upstream and downstream of the whole industry chain.
Judging from the current trend, quantum dots are entering the fast lane of development under the cooperation of materials, displays, terminals and channels. QLED will usher in explosive growth. The battle for future display technology will be settled.
