What is the most sensible choice about OLED?

In the showroom of the LGD Paju factory, there is a sci-fi scene: a refrigerator with a transparent door. You can see the apples, milk or vegetables inside by clicking on the transparent ones. Their freshness and other parameters will also be displayed. On the display of the transparent door...

The above technology is displayed on the LCD, and the variable shape of the OLED will bring more imagination to the smart home.

Although the price/performance ratio of OLED TVs is still not as good as that of LCD TVs, it is likely to make a wrong choice. Why is LG Display (LGD), one of the world's largest panel suppliers, investing 10 trillion won in the next three years, most of which will go to OLED. Behind this, the Korean panel industry is looking to gain a new competitive advantage through OLEDs in the context of the rapid expansion of LCD panel production capacity in mainland China.

Why bet OLED

A few days ago, the reporter of the "First Financial Daily" visited Seoul's largest electronics exhibition "KES" in Seoul. The most dazzling thing is still OLED TV. The 55, 65, and 77-inch ultra-high-definition (UHD) curved OLED TVs showcase their light, thin, and colorful features, including a 55-inch flat-panel OLED TV that can be hung on the wall even with two wire ropes. on.

LGD also showcased the latest applications for small and medium sized OLED flexible screens, including a 1.3-inch circular plastic OLED screen for smart watches, a 5.5-inch plastic OLED screen for smartphones, and a 12.3-inch automotive plastic OLED screen. The LGD staff at the site explained that the OLED smart watch display is lighter and thinner than the LCD. Our reporter saw that this 5.5-inch smart phone plastic OLED screen is curved back into an arch.

The on-site staff said that LGD is developing a foldable computer with a OLED screen and a curlable TV. When these more dazzling products were developed, there is no specific time yet.

At the same time as "Bet" OLED, LGD has not given up LCD technology, and there are still new technology investments and upgrades, such as RGBW technology (ie 4K technology). On-site test comparison shows that RGBW technology can save 35% power and 55% brightness. Currently, LGD's RGBW LCD panels cover 40 to 105 inches.

At the same time, using in-cell technology, LGD has launched an LCD smart phone screen that can be easily touched with gloves or fingers, and is also actively exploring the automotive electronics market.

Sun Zhengmin, the chief consultant of the Shenzhen Flat Panel Display Industry Association, who came to the International Information Display Exhibition (IMID 2015), believes that the price/performance ratio of OLED is still not as good as LCD. Compared with LCD TVs, such as 55-inch OLED TVs, LCD TVs are shrinking in response speed and contrast, and the gap between them and OLED TVs is "performance is almost the same, but the price is several times worse." Therefore, companies in mainland China have the intention to continue investing in higher-generation LCD panel lines.

BOE is about to invest in the construction of LCD 10.5 generation line, and as the world's largest LCD TV panel supplier, LGD's current highest generation LCD panel line is 8.5 generations, and LGD related person in charge to this reporter said that LGD invests in higher generation LCD The panel line is "possibly low". Because LGD uses 7~8 generation LCD panel production lines, through the new production line concept and sleeve cutting method, it can supply more competitive large LCD TV panels such as 60~70 inches.

Behind this, the Korean panel industry is looking to gain a new competitive advantage through OLEDs in the context of the rapid expansion of LCD panel production capacity in mainland China. LGD wants to leave more resources, "betting" on OLED, to seize new commanding heights for future competition.

What is the right choice?

How LGD's investment in 10 trillion won will be key in the next three years. Specifically, is it to invest in expanding the production capacity of OLED panels, or is it invested in the development of more glamorous products such as curlable TVs? The person in charge of LGD told the reporter of China Business News that most of the funds will be used to add factories, and investment in research and development related fields will be carried out separately. "The father of OLED" Dr. Deng Qingyun also stressed in an exclusive interview with this reporter in September this year that in the competition with LCD, "the next two years will be the key period for OLED investment."

At present, LGD produces large-size OLED TV panels, which have two 8-generation production lines, one of which has a capacity of 8,000 per month; the other can produce 26,000 pieces by the end of this year. In addition, small and medium-sized OLED panels, LGD has a 4.5-generation production line; another 6-generation production line recently released for investment will begin mass production in 2017, with an estimated monthly production capacity of 2,1500. LGD is still researching whether to build an OLED panel production line of more than 8 generations, and will make corresponding judgments on investment nodes according to market and customer demand.

OLED's transparent display, flexible display, and non-breakable features make it the key to next-generation display technology.

At present, Samsung has been in the global market for small-size OLED mobile phone screens; LGD's OLED technology focuses on TV screens. In the field of small and medium-sized OLED screens, LGD will not directly confront Samsung, but focus on small and medium-sized flexible screens to implement misplaced competition.

At KES 2015, LG and Samsung demonstrated the future of the Internet of Things (IoT). Samsung is actively deploying the “entrance” of smart homes such as smartphones, smart watches, routers, and wireless speakers, and LG is similar. Because the future "shows everywhere." The door panel of the refrigerator cabinet, the mirror of the bathroom, the table top of the dining table, the glass of the window, etc., will all become transparent displays and become "invisible" computers. OLED's flexibility, thinness, and non-breaking advantages can be fully exploited. It can be attached to a wall, rolled onto a pole, embedded in a mirror, folded into your pocket...

Blindly advocating OLEDs and blindly degrading OLEDs are not objective and rational attitudes. It not only pays attention to the hard-won huge LCD panel production capacity in mainland China, but also fully utilizes the advantages of liquid crystal to maximize the life of LCD industry. At the same time, it is expected to lay out OLED technology in advance from new technologies such as Internet of Things, big data and smart home. Panels, and preparations from materials and equipment, are the rational choices for the Chinese panel industry.
