At the Game Developers Conference, Unity Technologies revealed their 2018 roadmap, including details on how to register for the Unity 2018.1 beta.
As Unity continues to be one of the main engines for video gamers, apps and interactive media content creators, its need for new features and regular updates is critical. In the keynote speech at the Game Developers Conference, Unity Engineering Vice President Brett Bibby showed the audience the next year's development roadmap and developer expectations.
First, Unity 2018.1 will be released in April this year, with 2018.2 and 2018.3 released this summer and autumn respectively. The first major release will bring a host of exciting new features that will give developers new workflows and opportunities. One of the main new features of the Unity 2018 roadmap is to extend support for the new XR platform, including Magic Leap, Google Daydream Standalone, and even Google Play Instant.
Other improvements will be found throughout the engine, including a rendering pipeline, and when it comes to building their projects, developers have more options, including scriptable rendering pipelines for those looking for more configuration. Machine learning is another feature that Unity launched this year, with the goal of making it easier for content creators to reach it. General improvements to the engine will also help improve performance and reliability, making new physical component systems, C# operating systems and Burst compilers possible.
