Quantum Dots Clash with OLED TVs: Who Will Be the Next Generation of TV?

CES (Consumer Electronics Show) has always been the show ground for new technologies in the global color TV industry. This year, the battle between Quantum Dot TV and OLED TV has become the biggest attraction. Who will be the next generation TV? The author believes that QD TV and OLED TV may share the same destination in the future.
First of all, the camp of quantum dot TV and OLED TV, on the surface is clear and distinct, but in fact there are Hobby teeth interaction, and at the same time the enterprises that promote these two technologies are not rare.
In the QD TV camp, TCL's China Star Optoelectronics' 11th generation LCD panel production line, which has just started in Shenzhen, includes the production capacity of AMOLED TV panels. TCL is also developing printed display technology that can be used for both QD TVs and OLED TV panels. Samsung is the largest supplier of small and medium-sized OLED mobile phone panels in the world. Currently, it also has OLED TVs, but it is only in the commercial area. Last year, Hisense also demonstrated commercial OLED TVs at AWE (Shanghai Consumer Electronics Show). Sony, which has pioneered quantum dot technology, once again introduced OLED TVs at CES this year.
Although LG TV and Skyworth led the OLED TV camp, although they did not explicitly use quantum dot technology, neither LG nor Skyworth booed OLED TVs at the same time. At the same time, their largest TV sales still came from LCD TVs.
Secondly, the development direction of quantum dot TV and OLED TV will both use self-luminous materials for display, and eventually produce flexible TVs, and there are similarities in technology.

Current quantum dot TVs, in essence, still use liquid crystal (LCD) televisions optimized with quantum dot technology. Because they are passively luminous, they still need a backlight "box", making it difficult to completely create flexible displays. In the future, if we can develop a quantum dot light-emitting TV, that is truly a epoch-making TV product, and we can face up with OLED TVs in the flexible display field.
OLED TVs are considered to be next-generation TVs because they have the advantages of thinness, wide viewing angle, brilliant colors, and foldable folding. However, current OLED TVs need to further overcome the problems of low panel yield, high cost, and insufficient supply. Different from the currently used technology of vapor-depositing OLED materials, printed display technology is another breakthrough path.
Therefore, no matter whether it is the Samsung TV of the quantum dot TV camp, TCL, or the LG TV camp LG, they all compete for a share of a U.S. print display technology company. If you can print OLED materials or quantum dot materials that can emit light self-illuminating onto a substrate, like printing newspapers, production efficiency will be greatly improved.
Also self-luminous, OLEDs are organic materials, and quantum dots are inorganic materials. In theory, inorganic materials are more stable and have longer life than organic materials, so Samsung, TCL and others believe that quantum dot TV is the next generation of television.
However, OLED TVs are already on the market, and TVs with quantum dots are still in the lab. Currently, quantum dot backlight TVs on the market are essentially LCD TVs.
For consumers, who will really care about the concept of manufacturers hype, as long as the TV screen is large enough, the picture is clear enough, the appearance of enough fashion, easy to use, the price is affordable, will pay the bill.
The author believes that quantum dot-backlit LCD TVs will usher in a wave of popularity this year and will rapidly increase penetration in the coming years. The OLED TV to a wider range of popular, perhaps more distant future three to five years.
Quzhi Consulting Data shows that the global sales of OLED TVs will reach 850,000 units in 2016 and increase to 1.4 million to 1.5 million units in 2017. Constrained by panel supply, last year's sales growth of OLED TVs was less than expected. At present, there is basically only one LGD OLED TV panel supplier in the world.
In contrast, the industry chain of QD-backlit TV (QLED) is more mature. From the technical parameters, after optimizing the backlight with quantum dots, the color gap between LCD TVs and OLED TVs has been greatly reduced; the thickness of LCD TV's modules has been reduced to 4.9 mm, and no borders or ultra-thin fuselage are designed to allow OLEDs. The advantages of thin television are no longer obvious. More importantly, QLEDs have low cost, sufficient supply, and high volume conditions.
OLED TVs are constantly expanding their camps. Following LG and Skyworth, Konka, Changhong, Panasonic, and Sony have joined more and more brand TV companies. The upstream OLED panel production line is also increasing. The Huaxing Optoelectronics Shenzhen 11th Generation Line and the BOE Hefei 10.5 Generation Line all contain OLED TV panel plans. At the end of last year, BOE also cooperated with Skyworth to launch the first OLED TV with domestic screens.
In fact, the picture quality of the early PDP was not lost in LCD TVs, but the relatively closed industrial chain made it difficult for PDPs to scale up and eventually ended early. Therefore, in the contest between OLED TVs and Quantum TVs, apart from technology, open cooperation is more important than anything else.
