Interview time: November 23, 2008

The 512 Sichuan earthquake caused many people to lose their lives due to the massive collapse and damage of buildings. More than 7,000 schools have been damaged. The children had to take classes in the movable board room school building. Shortly after the earthquake, a group of Japanese-Chinese companies formed a project to donate a earthquake-resistant primary school for free. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on November 9th after the earthquake. To this end, we interviewed the designer of the spring-day Japanese-Chinese friendly primary school (named tentatively), SAKO Architectural Design Society, Mr. Keiichiro Ichiro, to share with us the design process in China and the design of earthquake-resistant primary school operations and details.
SAKO Architectural Design Co., Ltd.
IDCHINA: In 2004, I created my own design company in Beijing. What kind of opportunity did you make such a decision?
Keiichiro Ichiro: In 2004, I came to Beijing to host the Beijing Jianwai SOHO Phase III project. When the project was completed, I received the support of Teacher Fang Zhenning. There are many other design projects coming one after another. I don’t think so. An opportunity? So I decided to stay and set up my own company in Beijing, first to expand my business in China, and set up a firm in Tokyo one year later. Now we are working hard to expand our business around the world.
IDCHINA: Through these years SAKO's business distribution map, we found that your business has extended to many cities in China. How is this different from your previous design projects?
Keiichiro Ichiro: Different locations and different projects will definitely bring some design changes. We will constantly adjust our design strategies according to different geographical characteristics and the special needs of project customers, instead of sticking to some inherent things. Take the project of the Po Polan Library, first of all, the site is aimed at the children's group, and the children's emotional richness is impossible to understand. So I used 12 ribbons of different colors to form the space, entanglement and maneuver that surround the rainbow. Children are the most emotional, they do not need a certain order, so what is to be done here is to disappear the order, trying to make the space here more intuitive and free.
