The patented Evaporative Cooling Fuel Cell technology from IntelligentEnergy plays a key role in achieving high stack energy density. The evaporative cooling design helps eliminate the need for separate cooling channels between the base units, reducing the weight of the fuel cell and providing packaging and weight advantages over conventional liquid cooled fuel cells.
The electrochemical process of a fuel cell generates a large amount of thermal energy, and the thermal management system of the evaporative cooling unit removes this thermal energy by vaporization of the injected water. This design eliminates the humidifier and separate stack cooling loops necessary for conventional fuel cells, reducing the system complexity of the auxiliary equipment and reducing the size and weight of the fuel cell stack.
The evaporatively cooled fuel cell stack uses a stable bipolar metal sheet structure, an innovative flow energy management system, and intelligent control system software, which ultimately results in a fuel cell system with less auxiliary components, compact and high energy density. IntelligentEnergy has partnered with Suzuki Motor Co., which together announced the world's first approved fuel cell electric motorcycle with a 4 kW fuel cell system. The two companies have also established a joint venture to mass produce fuel cell base units and integrated systems.
