Intel Optane SSDs Debut in the Year

Tencent Digital (Sean) Intel President Brian Krzanich revealed in the second quarter 2016 financial report that Optane SSD based on 3D XPoint memory technology will be available before the end of this year.

According to the Q2 financial report, Intel's memory business was down 20% last year, lower than the company's expectations. But because of the new technology that will be released in the coming months, Intel remains optimistic about the future. “The Fab 68 in Dalian, China, started production of 3D NAND wafers at the end of the second quarter, which was planned earlier than before.” Krzanich said.

Krzanich subsequently stated that Intel has already sent some 3D XPoint samples to customers so that they can test and understand their own new technologies. The latter is expected to use these new technologies to make consumer and commercial-grade SSDs, which are 5-10 times more powerful than ordinary SSDs.

However, 3D XPoint DIMMs are more expected by Intel. This type of memory module will be available next year, and related products will be used in cloud computing technologies such as machine learning and big data.

In addition to commercial and enterprise solutions, 3D XPoint will also appear in consumer devices such as notebooks and game consoles. For example, with the help of this technique, the game can preload the next level into a cached environment, thereby increasing the speed of transitions between levels.
