China Mobile responds to 2G to stop investing is misreading

Yesterday, China Mobile’s spokesperson responded to media reports that “China Mobile stopped investing in 2G business” and responded by saying that China Mobile will continue to adhere to the coordinated development strategy of 2G, 3G, 4G, and WLAN four networks and will continue to optimize existing ones. 2G network to ensure network quality and stock user experience.

At the same time, China Mobile confirmed that in order to concentrate its efforts on the development of 4G networks, China Mobile’s “new” investment in 2G networks will stop, but it will continue to maintain 2G networks.

According to China Mobile’s latest operational data, as of the end of April this year, China Mobile had a total of 780 million subscribers, of which 2G subscribers were about 540 million, 3G subscribers were about 230 million, and 4G subscribers had grown to 4.79 million in four months.

For more than a decade, China Mobile has built the world's largest and most-used 2G network. However, with the development of technology and changes in the market competition environment, the era of voice and text messaging dominated by operators in the past is shifting to an era dominated by data traffic. Operators’ 2G and 3G networks also need to gradually migrate to 4G networks. The tilt of operators in network investment is also unstoppable. From an international perspective, many mainstream operators have stopped investing in 2G networks.
