A few days ago, the China Science and Technology Policy Research Center of Tsinghua University released the "China Artificial Intelligence Development Report 2018" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report"). The "Report" shows that China has become the country with the largest number of artificial intelligence patents in the world, slightly ahead of the United States and Japan, and the sum of the three countries accounts for 74% of the global patent disclosures.
The "Report" pointed out that in 2017, China's artificial intelligence market reached 23.7 billion yuan, an increase of 67% year-on-year, and the number of artificial intelligence companies reached 1011, second only to the United States in 2028. In terms of patent applications, China has become the country with the largest number of artificial intelligence patents in the world. From the perspective of major applicants, IBM, Microsoft, and Samsung rank among the world's top three in the number of patent applications in the field of artificial intelligence. China's State Grid Corporation of China has developed rapidly in artificial intelligence-related technologies in the past five years, and the number of applications ranked fourth in the world. In addition, among the top 30 institutions with artificial intelligence patent holdings in China, scientific research institutes, universities, and enterprises performed equally well, accounting for 52% and 48% respectively. The "Report" also pointed out that compared with leading foreign companies, Chinese companies lag behind domestic universities and research institutes in patent applications.
Even IT giants such as Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent lag behind foreign companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Samsung, and Google in the field of artificial intelligence patents and papers. In terms of papers, my country lacks truly original, breakthrough, and landmark research results, especially basic research results.
The "Report" recommends that my country should strengthen basic research in the field of artificial intelligence, optimize the scientific research environment, cultivate and attract top talents, vigorously encourage industry-university-research cooperation, make enterprises become the leading force in innovation, and actively participate in the construction of artificial intelligence global governance mechanisms.
