A big step towards true interoperability

The AllSeen Alliance, formed by the Linux Foundation, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the widespread adoption of connectivity products based on the open, universal development framework of the AllJoyn open source project.

This is a major event. We believe that the main obstacle to the full realization of the Internet of Everything is the lack of a unified framework that can always prioritize intelligent interoperability between different systems under any transport layer, platform, operating system or brand. The current "solutions" for connecting terminals are usually proprietary, creating isolated terminals and systems that are powerful but not interoperable.

Qualcomm InnovaTIon Center, Inc., an open source subsidiary of Qualcomm, launched the AllJoyn open source project in 2009 to address this pressing issue. AllJoyn is built on a self-describing-based terminal to dynamically learn which terminals are nearby and which features or interfaces they want to interact with. This concept of "introspection" brings what we call an ad hoc network. We think it is extremely important if you want your connection terminals to be backward compatible.

Some of our partners have been focused on implementing use cases that interact with one or two specific terminals. However, because all of these systems use AllJoyn technology, we are always excited about these novel experiences. Imagine... a security system that was originally designed to ensure that different sensors can trigger an IP camera and alert your smartphone, suddenly expanding its capabilities and uses when it found AllJoyn's TVs and light bulbs in the vicinity. With AllJoyn, these disparate systems automatically discover, communicate and interact to bring a new experience. Now, they can not only send reminders to your mobile phone, but also pop up messages on the TV, while the home lights will flash in different colors to scare off uninvited guests.

Terminal vendors are excited about this because with AllJoyn, they produce products that not only interact with other terminals, but also increase their interaction capabilities when purchased by end users. We believe that this will be a big competitive advantage when consumers learn to find and start to prefer terminals that can easily fit into AllJoyn's neighboring networks. Consumers are looking for these products because they know that the terminals they buy today can work with future-purchased terminals, and their capabilities are enhanced through this interoperability.

Qualcomm has recognized that a project with such ambitious goals that many brands and types of terminals can easily interact needs to be managed by a group of like-minded companies that benefit from AllJoyn's Widely popularized and expanded. The AllSeen Alliance is such a group - just look at the original members and you will know. Through this alliance, AllJoyn will continue to grow and develop with the help of various corporate and technology leaders around the world. We are excited because we know that open source software and pan-industry collaboration can quickly drive technology growth, promote innovation and encourage the market.

With AllJoyn and its service framework to ensure interoperability and the AllSeen Alliance, the Internet of Everything is just around the corner. We are pleased to see that with the help of the Alliance, our partners will launch a series of innovative terminals in 2014. Qualcomm strongly supports the collaboration of all members of the AllSeen Alliance and will continue to make substantial contributions to AllJoyn and its service framework. 2014 will be the most exciting year, as AllJoyn will break through the smart phone and peer-to-peer applications to enter your smart home. What kind of killer experience would you use with AllJoyn?
